Your home can be transformed by what you put on the walls. However, it can be a daunting prospect choosing wall art. Deciding what you need to achieve can be helpful in order to whittle down your choices. You may wish to add color or create a certain style to a room or you may want to personalize your home so that it reflects your household. Whatever your aim, there are wall art options available to help you brighten up your home.

Art Prints

Prints by artists can add color to a room and add to the style and decor. When choosing wall art it is worth spending time getting acquainted with different art movements. This will help you choose a piece that will complement your furnishings and style as well as your own taste. For a very traditional room, works of art such as those painted by the Pre-Raphaelite group or renaissance artists may be appropriate. To create a retro look, prints from the Pop Art period can look fantastic in poster frames or for an even more contemporary feel, prints of urban art will provide an edgy and dynamic look to a room.

Original Art

Original art can mean that you are adding a completely unique element to your home. Buying original art can be expensive, however, there is art available to suit most budgets. Local galleries may sell artist’s work at reasonable prices and many artists sell their work online. It is important when buying an original piece that you like the piece and it works well with your furnishings and style. Whilst it may be exciting to buy an investment piece from an up-and-coming artist, if their style doesn’t work in your room then it may be a mistake.

Personalized Wall Art

There are many ways to personalize your wall art to reflect your household. Some companies offer personalized wall art by adding your name or your child’s name to a piece. Your children’s pictures can be framed or you could even try painting yourself. Photography can be a great way to personalize a room. Photos of your family and friends can be printed onto canvas boards or framed in a style to suit your room.
Wall art is a creative and economical way to brighten up your home. Whether you want to add some color create a certain style or personalize a room, there are easy ways to achieve your aspiration.

Suzy James decorated her lounge and decided to get some art work and paintings off the internet, www.colourgraphics.com supplied her with many different prints that fitted in perfectly with the theme she was going for.

Decorating for Christmas is a favorite activity for most people. However, it occasionally becomes overwhelming due to so many choices when decorating. Thankfully, you can narrow holiday decorating to a few must-have items. Below are the items that you need when decorating for Christmas.

Wreath:

A beautiful holiday wreath hanging on the front door welcomes holiday visitors, and it sets the stage for the decorations that are waiting inside the house. Choose a wreath that matches your other decor, so it all flows together. Consider investing in a few wreaths, and alternate the doors in which you display them. Wreaths are also great for hanging above the mantle or on various walls throughout the house.

Christmas tree:

What other item exhibits Christmas more than a Christmas tree? For this reason, an exquisitely adorned tree is necessary for holiday decorating. Coordinate your Christmas tree with your other holiday decor. Use trees of various sizes throughout the house to incorporate festive decorations into your home even more.

Stockings:

Stockings are must-have items when turning your home into a winter wonderland. If you have a fireplace, consider hanging the stockings on the mantle. Personalize stockings by having family members names embroidered on them. Another suggestion is to match stockings with your other decor in color and style.

Lights:

Lights inside, outside or both are necessary for holiday decorating. Use white lights in moderation for a very classy look. Consider combining wreaths and white lights outdoors on your windows. Drape a string of lights across a mantle or down a stairwell for indoor adornment. The important point to remember when decorating with lights is to not over use them and thus overemphasize their effect.

Items to highlight your beliefs:

Christmas has different meanings for different people. If you are Jewish, a menorah is necessary for your holiday decorating. Christians should have a nativity displayed as part of their holiday decorations. If you are not religious, you can decorate using snowmen or Santa items. Since Christmas has different meanings depending on personal beliefs, incorporating what is important to your family is essential when decorating. Of course, even religious people can decorate using snowmen or Santa items.

Decorating for Christmas is sometimes overwhelming. However, if you focus on the must-have items for holiday decorating, it will make the job easier. The above list gives you an idea of what is necessary when decorating for Christmas.

With Christmas only a matter of weeks away, now is the time to start preparing for the festivities if you have not already done so. One of the most difficult tasks can be selecting presents for friends and family, with many hours spent thinking about and searching for the perfect gifts, sometimes with only days to spare. Aside from this, if you are having guests for Christmas yourself, you will be keen to pay particular attention to how your home is decorated, not forgetting your table when you put on a big spread on the twenty-fifth. It may not initially spring to mind, but glassware can provide a solution to both problems; a thoughtfully selected gift and a beautiful table decoration.

Something to suit everyone

People increasingly seem to have everything they want and need these days, which can make present selection all the harder; not to mention the increasing range of products from which to select, with new gadgets available each year. However, if you are after a more traditional gift, which can be something personal to whoever you are buying for and will be cherished for many years, glassware can offer just this. We all have everyday glasses, vases and bowls that are used day in day out; it doesn’t matter if these get dropped or chipped, as they tend to be inexpensive for this purpose. However, it’s nice to have something a little more special that you can bring out on an occasion such as a birthday, party or simply for entertaining friends. This is exactly what the glassware that you give as a present will be. Far from the plain everyday glassware, that given as a gift is pleasing to the eye with intricate patterns and well thought out color schemes are a prominent feature. Once you have chosen the type of item to buy you can tailor the design to what you know the recipient will most like; with many items of glassware handmade it will be a truly unique gift. It’s also nice to give the items as a gift that we would not usually buy for ourselves, such as decanters, cocktail glasses and glass ornaments. Glassware as a gift will please both those who like to receive practical presents and those who enjoy the finer things in life.

The easy choice

If you still can’t decide on the item that you feel your recipient would most appreciate, the answer is simple; many vendors of glass provide gift cards, so it doesn’t matter where they live, with online shopping it’s easy for your friend or family member to select the glassware of their choice. Selecting the right present for someone isn’t the only problem; getting the gift to them can be another issue. While this is easy for people you’ll see over the Christmas period, for those who live elsewhere it might be a worry. However, with careful packaging by experienced staff you can be sure that the glassware will reach your loved one in one piece. The thought of handmade products can sometimes be a deterrent, as although you know that the quality and detail will be second to none, it comes with a price tag to reflect that. However, handmade glassware represents good value for money and with some good glassware deals around, it is an affordable option even when shopping for presents within a budget.

Finishing touches

Having researched glassware to send as gifts for others, you will be well aware on the selection on offer, which should make purchasing the items for your Christmas table easy. Whether you want to choose a set of wine glasses complete with a matching wine cooler or decanter, a glass bowl to display festive fruits or a glass cake stand to show off your Christmas cake, the choice is yours. Particularly if additional money to spend is limited, you may decide to treat yourself to a new item of glassware each Christmas, adding to your collection year on year. Although you are not overhauling all of your glassware for Christmas, the new items that you purchase can refresh your existing items, bring your dinner service up to date and make an impression on your guests. It’s certainly true that the little things can make all of the difference and your table will be testament to this.

While most of us tend to think of silver when it comes to our jewelry or our silverware, there are actually quite a few other things silver is great for. Not only does it create stunning objects but it also is becoming a very important aspect of everyday health as well as solar energy.

Today, we are going to let you in on bits of information that you may not have realized about our favorite type of metal; allowing you to recognize just how important this fine metal is and why everyone is so gaga over it.

Keeping Your Water Pure

Silver is actually used in water filters as a way to get rid of bacteria and algae that can form within your filters. Not only does silver get rid of any issues you may have, but it also prevents them from happening in the future. Always make sure to buy a water filter that contains silver (the metal helps with water odor as well).

Silver Works Great with Electronics

Many sound systems use silver as a way to boost the overall sound quality. Silver is extremely conductive, getting the job done very nicely. There also is a lot of silver in your typical car. A dab of silver on the tip of switches can get you a long way; helping power your engine, windows and much more, fast.

Batteries

Silver is used in batteries for devices like hearing aids as a way to lengthen the life of the product and saving you money.

Photography

Silver is used in photography due to its affordability and high quality. Your pictures wouldn’t come out as beautiful as they do if it weren’t for silver. It doesn’t take much for silver to activate, causing your photos to become permanent parts of your history.

Jewelry and Silverware

The reason silver is such a loved and trusted metal in jewelry and silverware is because it has the quality of gold but gives a much brighter shine that cannot be denied. Silver is the easiest metal to polish and looks the best when compared side by side to all other metals.

Silver in Clothing

Small amounts of silver is added to clothing in order to prevent bacteria from growing. Silver also works great at keeping your clothes smelling nice, which we think is a plus.

Silver and Glass, a Beautiful Mix

Ever wondered how a mirror works? It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? Did you know that in order for a mirror to work, silver must be present? It’s hard to imagine a world without any mirrors!

Silver coated glass has been found to be able to reflect 70% of heat. This minor change to a home or business can save quite a pretty penny in a year’s time. In the past few years, the amount of silver-coated windows has more than doubled.

Medical Uses of Silver

Silver is a great fighter against bacteria and this is why medically, silver is used on a regular basis. Silver helps speed up the body’s healing process and lowers the risk of infections. All sorts of items around hospitals contain silver in them to keep everything sterile. This includes: bandages, hospital gowns, and even bed frames. Other types of metals can harm the human body, but silver is extremely gentle which is why it is in such high demand.

Silver can also be found in catheters to keep the risk of infection down as well as in X-ray machines. Another interesting fact about silver is that it has been recently added to breathing tubes. Studies have shown that the small amount of silver coated actually helped fight against pneumonia.

Many Industrial Uses

In just about every industry you can think of, silver is a necessity. Silver is used for its strength, reliability and electrical and thermal conductivity. Unlike other metals, silver can handle the most drastic changes in temperature.

When it comes to solar energy, silver has a leading role. It is actually the main ingredient in solar panels today and the reason we are able to turn the sun’s light into energy to power our homes and businesses. In upcoming years, silver is going to be used more than ever to keep us living in a world that keeps getting ‘greener’.

Invest in Your Future with Silver

With so many uses, it’s no wonder silver demand is so high. Silver not only helps us on a daily basis in one way or another but it is also an investment in our futures. The price of silver is constantly changing and this is why it’s always a good idea to keep on your toes and see what you can get for your money.

Saving a stash of silver may prove to be an amazing investment for not only your future but the future of your family as well. It’s always good to have a backup plan in case money is to ever become tight. Watch closely and we’re sure you are bound to find some great deals on silver. Watching the rates of silver is a lot like watching the stock market moving up and down; but boy once you find a great deal, the wait will be well worth it.

Martini glass, also known as cocktail glass, has been recognized widely for its fascinating shape as well as its ability to keep the drink cold without any ice in it. This dramatic V-shaped vessel can be easily found as displays at bars or as unique gifts. It is great as decorations when it is filled with stones or candles. In addition, you can also utilize martini glass for a romantic dinner, farewell party, or any special occasions.

The basic structure of martini glasses is very similar to regular wine glasses. It is characterized by a cone-shaped, wide bowl and a long stem. The cone-shaped vessel allows the customers to drink the beverage without burying their nose into the bowl. The long stem of the glass allows you to avoid contact with the bowl so that your hand temperature will not influence the drink.

The capacity of a martini glass varies, starting from the regular 4.5 – 6 fl oz to the giant ones with 12 fl oz. Nowadays, the use of this glass is not only limited to martini containers but also to a number of different beverages, such as champagne, eggnog, cocktail, and more astonishingly, dessert.

Modern martini glasses have experienced some noticeable break-through improvements in their designs and types during the past years. One of the most popular designs is the stub model, which eliminates the stem of the glass, attaching the bowl to directly to the base. This type of design is also seen in wine glasses, and seems to satisfy the demand for exotic designs especially for parties and restaurants.

A martini glass is also called a cocktail glass, and is used for various kinds of mixed drinks. Cocktail is a symbol of modern, cosmopolitan vibe that seems to be free and innovative compared to other types of drinks with longer histories. Whatever you mix would result in a new type of drink, and new recipes could technically sprout out all the time. The distinctive V-formed martini glass has become a popular iconic symbol of this beloved drink, cocktail.

So how were martini glasses first discovered? There are lots of stories related to this point. The first martini is said to be invented in the late 18th century in San Francisco, US by a bartender named Jerry Thomas in the Occidental hotel. His customer asked him to whip up a special yet original drink. That customer was actually on a trip to Martinez, another Bay area town where the gold rush had started. The brilliant bartender came up with an impromptu martini recipe which was later named “Martinez Special,” and became the forefather of martinis. This is said to be the first time when a v-shaped wine glass – later to be used primarily for cocktails – was used.

There is another funny story about this drink container. Martini glass was supposedly first introduced during the Prohibition in the United States, when alcohol was banned. The cone shape and the wide brim of the martini glass were designed to make it easier for people to drink the liquor quickly before the police came.

Another argument regarding the exotic shape of a martini glass is that the wide bowl is used to mix the ingredients perfectly while the open mouth is used to make the olive or cherry garnish standout.

Like this, martini glasses possess a tremendously colorful history, with lots of unconfirmed accounts.

For the past few years, many people have debated whether different wine glasses would influence the flavor and scent of their wine. While it is hard to argue that every casual drinker will be able to discern the slightest differences in the taste of wine depending on the wine glass used, there are a few factors related to the components of a wine glass which will affect your drinking experience regardless of your level of expertise of the complicated sides of the varieties and drinking methods of wine. Certain types of wine glasses are better suited for certain types of wine. Hence, arbitrarily pouring a fine wine into any inappropriate glass is a fatal mistake.

According to the November 1999 issue of the Wall Street Journal, no two wine glasses could convey equal flavor and smell of the same wine. A sample test has been done to prove this fact. Using the same bottle, wine was poured into three different wine glasses. When they tasted each of them, they experienced various sensations depending on the type of wine glass.

This can be both an imagined difference and a real difference, but the point is not to prove whether it is real or not – the point is that such difference exists, and that there are ways to use them for a better experience.

The most common types of wine glasses designed for the purpose of making certain types of wine taste better are red wine glasses and white wine glasses. These two broad kinds of glasses will definitely change how you perceive the flavor and aroma of wine.

Other critical factors that can influence the flavor of wine include the surface area, the size and the color of the glassware, the temperature of your hands, as well as the shape of the glass.

A basic tulip-shaped glass, for instance, has a fat bulb and narrow mouth. The aroma that is supposed to rise upward will be trapped inside the glass. So, when you sniff the liquid inside your glass, you can smell the dramatic aroma. This is extremely important because ninety percent of what you think is the taste of wine is actually the aroma. The wider the exposed surface area, the flatter taste of wine you acquire.

Like this, wine glass shape does bring more joy and amusement to the drinking experiences of many people. Therefore, choosing the right glass for the right wine is a must.

Knowing the anatomy of a wine glass is essential, especially if you are a true wine enthusiast. A particular type of wine glass can highlight different sides of the taste and aroma of your wine. In addition, it can also influence your perception of the liquid inside. For example, a beautiful glass makes the wine in it seem more tasty. All these influences that wine glasses have on us are based on the fact that we enjoy wine with not just our tongue, but also with our eyes and nose. One could even argue that everything, from the touch of the stem to the sound of wine being poured into the glass, all contribute to a fuller wine experience.

Regardless of the ‘perception’ issue, there is indeed science behind a shape of a wine glass. Once you fully understand the shape of the glassware, you will understand that a good glass is designed to bring out the best sides of your wine.

1. The Base

The base of a wine glass is the flat, round-shaped part at the bottom of the glass that allows it to stand freely. This piece will not affect the flavor and the smell of wine directly. Therefore, whether to pick thicker foots or light airy foots mostly depends on your personal preference.

However, in some rare cases in which the wine glass does not have a separate base at all (that is, no stem, no base), you will have to hold the glass with the whole of your palm. In this case, your body temperature will influence the taste of the wine.

2. The Stem

The stem is the long, thin supportive component of a wine vessel which connects the bowl to the foot of the glass. It keeps your hands from accidentally warming the wine, especially when you are drinking white wine. Remember that you have sufficient body heat which could prematurely change the temperature of your wine. In addition, the stem will keep your fingerprints off the bowl.

On the other hand, stem-less wine glass art, also mentioned in the previous section, is sometimes highly regarded as a must in wine consumers’ cabinets because of the exotic design and the characteristic hold of the glass. If you choose to buy stemless wine glasses, know when to use them.

3. The Bowl

The bowl is the most important part of wine glasses. It comes in various shapes and sizes, and determines how much air can enter the glass through its width. This can dramatically change the flavor and aroma of wine.

We now see that the anatomy of a wine glass can completely change the flavor and taste of your wine. Each part of a wine glass is there for a specific purpose. Because of this, you should identify its components carefully before purchasing any, and know what you are going to use the wine glasses for.

Good luck in choosing the perfect wine glass!

The first glass factory in the United States was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1608. However, the glass industry was not successful because of famine, Native American attacks, and the scarcity of workers.

Only in 1739 was the first successful glass factory built in New Jersey by a man called Caspar Wistar from Germany. Clear and colored domestic glassware and window glass was mainly produced at the time. The factory prospered until 1780 and similar factories emerged in New Jersey. Today, the term “South Jersey type glassware” describes all of these productions in this period.

Another successful factory was established by the German Henry William Stiegel in Pennsylvania. Bottles, window glass, and domestic glassware were produced there. His glassware was decorated with enameled floral motifs and engraved in the Bohemian manner, with deep surface decorations. This style eventually spread as far as Ohio, but few pieces can be attributed to any specific factory. Thus, “Stiegel-type glassware” describes the 18th century style in general.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, glass was imported from Europe, but the domestic glassware industry still prospered. For example, the German J.F. Amelung established the New Bremen glass Manufactory in Maryland. His products had emblems, names, and dates engraved on them, so that they are easily identified as Amelung glass unlike previous factory glasses. Colored glass vessels with gilding on the engraving were also produced.

Around the time of Industrial Revolution, the glass industry was heavily influenced by technological developments. The invention of mold-pressing in 1827 of operating molds by machine had an enormous impact on the American glass industry and later in Europe. Clear and colored domestic glassware could now be mass-produced cheaply, for more people, faster. Glassware, which had been a symbol of luxury since the Ancient Egyptians and Syrians started the trade several thousand years ago, could now be accessed by almost anyone at an affordable price.

By 1830, demand for fine glassware had significantly increased and as many as 90 glasshouses were operating in North America. Some famous ones among them were the New England Glass Company, Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, Mount Washington Glass Company, Libbey Glass Company, and Bakewell Glasshouse.

Later, pressed glass became a medium for political propaganda, and free-blown, engraved, cut tableware was manufactured for the wealthy. For example, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Art Neaveau vessels, stained glass windows, and lamps were created in the 1890s.

Today the United States has an exciting glass art scene like never before. Many of the famous modern masters are from the US, such as Harvey Littleton, Dominic Labino, Dale Chihuly, and Richard Marquis.

Most of these works are signed, dated, and registered to verify their authenticity. Often, works of artists are owned by prominent national museums, such as the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan. Some examples of such American artists are Dale Chihuly, Correia Art Glass, and Sabrina Knowles.

There are numerous kinds of glassware made for various drinks that have been used since the medieval times. Various vessels have been developed for a specific type of drink, while others were made to be used for all kinds of beverages in general. Here, some of the glassware used for drinking is listed.

- Ale glass

This type of glassware was developed for ale or strong beer in England around 1600. Because the drink was strong, the drinking glass was accordingly small. The shape was slim, and it was frequently decorated with hops and barley. Common methods of decorations were wheel-engraving, enameling, and gilding.

- Baluster

These are glasses with a baluster stem – stem with knops of different shapes and sizes – , produced in England. They are usually on the heavier side and made of colorless lead glass. Mostly they lack decoration and are simple in design.

- Beaker

Glassware with a flat base and cylindrical body, they were first made throughout the Roman Empire, mostly with unrefined green glass. Later they spread all over Europe, such as Germany, Venice, and England. The cone beaker and the claw beaker were some common types.

- Brandy Glass

Brandy was popular among the wealthy in the 18th century. Today they have a balloon shaped bowl on a stemmed foot. The bowl is supposed to be held with the entire hand to warm the brandy.

- Goblet

Goblets are large stemmed glasses, and are mostly highly ornate. Hence they were rare and expensive when they first appeared in the 9th century. In the 15th century, they became more common in Venice and then in Europe in general. In many cases they were intend for toasting on special occasions rather than for everyday use.

- Mug and tankard

This glassware was used for beer and cider.
